The focus of this surah is on the subject of this abrupt and sudden earthquake in Judgement Day. The earth suddenly reveals its treasures and whatever hidden in it. In that Day the earth explains what has happened to it with exact and detailed information.This is a continuous collection of information and the earth has great care and command over the events that become renew every moment ; moreover, it has this ability because God orders and allows it.
In that Day everyone sees what s/he has done because the curtains of darkness and ambiguity have been drawn from their hearts and eyes and his/her actions and deeds will be appeared.
This earthquake can happen every day in the earth of our bodies and ruins and makes a mess in our lives to see the deepest and hidden layers of ourselves and our actions. In this sudden earthquake everything will be revealed and be brought up to surface to be seen in the light. Also, every day and every moment God allows our soul and body to be the witness of our deeds and tell the news of our secrets to ourselves. We should clear and purify our hearts and eyes to see its revelance. If there is an earthquake in our life, it would not be a bad thing; it is a way that God wants to show us our hidden treasures and clean our soul and bodies and lead us to guidance.

Homework No. 5 A brief discussion on Zelzal surah
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ
إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالهَا(1) وَ أَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا(2) وَ قَالَ الْانسَانُ مَا لهَا(3) یَوْمَئذٍ تحُدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا(4) بِأَنَّ رَبَّکَ أَوْحَى لَهَا(5)َوْمَئذٍ یَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتًا لِّیُرَوْاْ أَعْمَلَهُمْ(6) فَمَن یَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَیْرًا یَرَهُ(7) وَ مَن یَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا یَرَهُ(8)
Zelzal Surah speaks about a huge and terrible incident with special signs and results. This Surah has a conditional frame. It starts with a provision and finishes with a response of provision, containing 5 provisions and 4 responses.
Zelzal is the earth shaking with the most severe earthquakes. Let’s see it’s derivations in the Quran:
أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تَدْخُلُواْ الْجَنَّةَ وَ لَمَّا یَأْتِکُم مَّثَلُ الَّذِینَ خَلَوْاْ مِن قَبْلِکُم مَّسَّتهْمُ الْبَأْسَاءُ وَ الضَّرَّاءُ وَ زُلْزِلُواْ حَتىَ یَقُولَ الرَّسُولُ وَ الَّذِینَ ءَامَنُواْ مَعَهُ مَتىَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ أَلَا إِنَّ نَصْرَ اللَّهِ قَرِیبٌ(214) Baghare
* یَأَیُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُواْ رَبَّکُمْ إِنَّ زَلْزَلَةَ السَّاعَةِ شىَءٌ عَظِیمٌ(1)Haj
هُنَالِکَ ابْتُلىِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَ زُلْزِلُواْ زِلْزَالًا شَدِیدًا(11)Ahzab
إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالهَا(1)zelzal
Zelzal and its derivations are used 6 times in Quran. In the first verse suffering (baasa), hardship (zaara) and shaken violently (zolzelo) are in the same level. Zolzelo in this verse means insecurity and anxiety.
The second verse speaks about the happening of the Hour of The Resurrection Day resembles a Frightful earthquake. The third verse is about the time that the believers were examined; they were shaken to their utmost shaking. The last one in our desired surah is the same genes with the secondone.
The second key word of the surah is burden (saghala) that means heaviness, gravity, weight. Let’s see it’s derivations in the Quran:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا یَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ وَ إِن تَکُ حَسَنَةً یُضَاعِفْهَا وَ یُؤْتِ مِن لَّدُنْهُ أَجْرًا عَظِیمًا(40)
وَ الْوَزْنُ یَوْمَئذٍ الْحَقُّ فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِینُهُ فَأُوْلَئکَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ(8) یَسْلُونَکَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَیَّانَ مُرْسَئهَا قُلْ إِنَّمَا عِلْمُهَا عِندَ رَبىّ لَا یجُلِّیهَا لِوَقْتهِا إِلَّا هُوَ ثَقُلَتْ فىِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الْأَرْضِ لَا تَأْتِیکمُ إِلَّا بَغْتَةً یَسَلُونَکَ کَأَنَّکَ حَفِىٌّ عَنهْا قُلْ إِنَّمَا عِلْمُهَا عِندَ اللَّهِ وَ لَاکِنَّ أَکْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا یَعْلَمُونَ(187) هُوَ الَّذِى خَلَقَکُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَ جَعَلَ مِنهْا زَوْجَهَا لِیَسْکُنَ إِلَیهْا فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّئهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلاً خَفِیفًا فَمَرَّتْ بِهِ فَلَمَّا أَثْقَلَت دَّعَوَا اللَّهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَئنِ ءَاتَیْتَنَا صَالِحًا لَّنَکُونَنَّ مِنَ الشَّاکِرِینَ(189) Aaraf
وَ مَا تَکُونُ فىِ شَأْنٍ وَ مَا تَتْلُواْ مِنْهُ مِن قُرْءَانٍ وَ لَا تَعْمَلُونَ مِنْ عَمَلٍ إِلَّا کُنَّا عَلَیْکمُ شهُودًا إِذْ تُفِیضُونَ فِیهِ وَ مَا یَعْزُبُ عَن رَّبِّکَ مِن مِّثْقَالِ ذَرَّةٍ فىِ الْأَرْضِ وَ لَا فىِ السَّمَاءِ وَ لَا أَصْغَرَ مِن ذَالِکَ وَ لَا أَکْبرَ إِلَّا فىِ کِتَابٍ مُّبِینٍ(61)Yunes
وَ تحَمِلُ أَثْقَالَکُمْ إِلىَ بَلَدٍ لَّمْ تَکُونُواْ بَلِغِیهِ إِلَّا بِشِقّ الْأَنفُسِ إِنَّ رَبَّکُمْ لَرَءُوفٌ رَّحِیمٌ(7)Nahl
وَ نَضَعُ الْمَوَازِینَ الْقِسْطَ لِیَوْمِ الْقِیَمَةِ فَلَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَیْا وَ إِن کَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ أَتَیْنَا بِهَا وَ کَفَى بِنَا حَاسِبِینَ(47)Anbia
فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِینُهُ فَأُوْلَئکَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ(102)Momenon
وَ لَیَحْمِلُنَّ أَثْقَالهَمْ وَ أَثْقَالًا مَّعَ أَثْقَالهِمْ وَ لَیُسْلُنَّ یَوْمَ الْقِیَمَةِ عَمَّا کَانُواْ یَفْترَونَ(13) Ankaboot
یَابُنىَ إِنهَّا إِن تَکُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ فَتَکُن فىِ صَخْرَةٍ أَوْ فىِ السَّمَاوَاتِ أَوْ فىِ الْأَرْضِ یَأْتِ بهِا اللَّهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَطِیفٌ خَبِیرٌ(16)Loghman
وَ قَالَ الَّذِینَ کَفَرُواْ لَا تَأْتِینَا السَّاعَةُ قُلْ بَلىَ وَ رَبىّ لَتَأْتِیَنَّکُمْ عَالِمِ الْغَیْبِ لَا یَعْزُبُ عَنْهُ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ فىِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ لَا فىِ الْأَرْضِ وَ لَا أَصْغَرُ مِن ذَالِکَ وَ لَا أَکْبرَ إِلَّا فىِ کِتَابٍ مُّبِینٍ(3) قُلِ ادْعُواْ الَّذِینَ زَعَمْتُم مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِ لَا یَمْلِکُونَ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ فىِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ لَا فىِ الْأَرْضِ وَ مَا لهَمْ فِیهِمَا مِن شِرْکٍ وَ مَا لَهُ مِنهْم مِّن ظَهِیرٍ(22) Saba
وَ لَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى وَ إِن تَدْعُ مُثْقَلَةٌ إِلىَ حِمْلِهَا لَا یحُمَلْ مِنْهُ شىَءٌ وَ لَوْ کاَنَ ذَا قُرْبىَ إِنَّمَا تُنذِرُ الَّذِینَ یخَشَوْنَ رَبهَّم بِالْغَیْبِ وَ أَقَامُواْ الصَّلَوةَ وَ مَن تَزَکىَ فَإِنَّمَا یَتزَکىَ لِنَفْسِهِ وَ إِلىَ اللَّهِ الْمَصِیرُ(18)Fater
أَمْ تَسْلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ(40)Tour
سَنَفْرُغُ لَکُمْ أَیُّهَ الثَّقَلَانِ(31)Arrahman
أَمْ تَسْلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ(46)Ghalam
وَ أَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا(2) فَمَن یَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَیْرًا یَرَهُ(7) وَ مَن یَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا یَرَهُ(8) Zelzal
فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِینُهُ(6)Ghareaa
As it is seen, “Saghala” and its derivations are used 20 times in Quran, in materialistic or spiritual way. The maximum number, 6 times, are used as particle weight ( mesghala zarraten). 3 times are used as “those whose scale of good deeds show heavy”, (sagholat mavazinoho), And 3 times are used as particle weight in the skies and in the earth.
In general, the word saghala has two main meanings. First one is heaviness and weight, second one is attention and accuracy in a thing or in a problem.
In zelzal surah particle weight mentioned in 7th and 8th verses deducted from weights named in 2ed verse.
Points of Surah:
The earth has sense.
The earth records the actions and we can deposit our deeds to the earth.
Nothing is missed in the world, therefore enough attention is required for all of our activities.
We should do good jobs from different aspects.

Attention! Attention!
Be Alert!!! There is an ongoing Severe Earthquake convulsing the whole globe so soon! Be prepared and Cautious!
This sura is reminding an important occurrence in human's life following the Creator_Nurturer's Command to the earth.
The earth got permitted to convulse and throw up her burdens of treasures , humans' graves and all_out observed and recorded evidence! Man is confusedly and anxiously asking, " What happened??" "Why is the earth so restless and shaky?"
The earth has been witnessed all human's deeds and behaviors patiently but not so far been allowed to betray them since she was good obedience to keep human's secrets and confides till the due time. And now by the Creator_Nurturer's permission, the earth reveals all and all evidence consciously and exactly.
This a horrible and critical moment of truth for mankind to confront his deeds speechlessly, with no excuse. And surely human has no way to flee or deny it. He must see and become aware of what he has done on the earth with no exception! All his confidential trivial actions are presented in front of his bewildered eyes.
Coming back from their judging site, people move in various groups owing to their deeds toward receiving their rewards or punishments. So only if he knows and believes that one Day all his deeds, no matter how tiny good or bad ones, are shown and illustrated in front of his eyes, wouldn't he live more wisely and cautiously??

A view of the Zelzal surah
In the Name of Allah
A huge earthquake happens in the Resurrection day. An earthquake that will release the burden of the earth. The earth which was standing silently till that day. “Burden” might have different meanings but I interpret it as the man and their deeds. The deeds which were accumulated in earth by its inhabitants during centuries and the earth has did well in safekeeping them and are now returned to the nurturer.
Now, let’s take a look back at ourselves. Earthquakes that take place in our lives, all suitably interpreted as “Fetneh”, cause intense anxieties to us. Worries that we should pass through healthily and let our forgotten potentials to be stimulated. The possibilities we didn’t ever believe that could be activated in us some day.
Though, the question is “what is the real cause of these events either in the Resurrection date or during our daily lives”. Briefly expressing in a single phrase, to evaluate our observation capability for obtaining a deep understanding of the life.
In the Resurrection day, the curtains are turned aside and the humans see a portrayal of their deeds appearing in their real shapes not understandable in this life. This is, for sure, an upper-level understanding obtained in aftermath of the earthquake. A similar objective is pursued in every day resurrections that are designed to prepare us for the main resurrection. The experiences that treat us for reaching new and deeper insights are shakes that awaken us from forgetfulness and amazement and takes our attentions toward the main goal behind the life. Anxiety, however, is a border we should not stop behind in order to experience all cheerful life we are promised (in Quran) to achieve in this world. Hoping that we can all obtain the most pleasant results from the earthquakes we encounter within our lives and are protected from the amazement of the Recurrence day, Ensha-allah.

In the Name of Allah The Merciful Beneficent
When the earth is shaken with its most Severe earthquakes,
And the earth throws up her burdens[ Such as the contents of the graves and The mines ],
Man keeps saying:" What has happened To the earth?"
On that Day she shall relate her news,[ Regarding the deeds of her inhabitants ],
Because indeed it has been revealed to Her by your Creator and Nurturer that She should speak up.
On that Day people shall come out from Their graves hastily, that their Deeds be shown to them:
Then he who has done a particle-weight Of good shall see it,
And he who has done a particle-weight Of evil shall see it.
Zilzal Sura
One day the earth is going to be shaken severely and reveal everything she knows about all human beings and about what has happened on it. 'Zilzal' sura says even particle-weight good or bad deeds are going to be seen.
I was thinking about the magnitude of the mentioned earthquakes vs. the size of these particle-weight deeds, and about what the earth is going to reveal about my deeds! Then I realized I need to have a mild heartquake in this world before my death in order to first reveal my heart's secrets and second refresh my way of acting and behaving in daily confrontations.
So, I thought about some particle-weight deeds, came to some conclusions, and then wrote some questions down for you dear readers. Please take your time to answer them carefully and honestly.
- Do you frown at your parents time to time?
- Do you give up your seat to an older one? Or do you try not to look at her/his direction?
- If the amount of food is little, do you eat less for the others' sake or do you feel terrible?
- The subway train stops at the station, do you wait for the passengers to get off first or do you rush in before it?
- Do you share your knowledge with the others or keep it for yourself?
- You are among simple uneducated people, do you feel superior?
- You can help someone just with your smile; do you do that? Or do you think is not worth doing?
- Do you spend enough time with family members and relatives?
- Do you ever think about your neighbors?
- Do you do anything possible for your neighborhood/city so that it looks much cleaner and much more beautiful?
- Do you care about animals and plants around you? Or do you think the earth is just your home?
- Do you help the needy? Why? What is your intention while helping them?
- Do you always expect other people to greet and respect you?
- There are a lot of tasks to do; do you pick up the easiest one and leave the more difficult ones to the others?
- Do you ever tell tiny white lies?
- Do you ...............................?
- Do you ...............................?
To tell the truth, I had three heartquakes!! You know, the first one revealed where I am standing about these apparently small deeds; if I am doing good or bad deeds. The second came soon after and was more severe! Do you know what? If you have imagined yourself in the situations above, and have chosen the best and the most decent actions ever, you have just been doing your duties and not anything more than that!! You have not done any favor! And the third heartquake was this point,"What if I want to do more than my duties on the earth?? What if I want to be a perfect one??"
The heartquakes taught me something very important and essential. There are two very prominent steps which should be followed.The first step is doing duties, and the second is following the instructions for perfection. And I believe, for both steps, Qu'ran is the most reliable and the perfect reference.
I hope on the day the earth is going to reveal her secrets, she tells good things about each and everyone of us.
